In My Garden

by Christopher Lloyd

(Macmillan, 1994)

A collection of some of Lloyd’s best essays arranged month by month. “Gardening like living, should be fun,” he writes in his introduction. “It can’t be, much of the time, but we should do our best to make it so.” He likes mixed borders with bright colors and bold foliage and has no problem saying what he thinks, contending, for instance, that “most botanical gardens are a visual mess, though packed with interesting detail – these places are intent on educating us.” Lloyd, who died last year, never failed to educate us with style and grace.
